EP Review: Malum Sky – Diatribe (Sliptrick Records)
Formed in 2014 and hailing from Cardiff in South Wales, Malum Sky have been gaining widespread acclaim following their self-titled debut EP in the Summer of 2015 and 2017 win of the South Wales regional finals of the ‘Bloodstock – Metal to the Masses’ competition. This earned the band a well-deserved place at Bloodstock Open Air 2017 on the New Blood Stage that year where they packed out the tent.
Fast-forward to 2019 and January 15th sees the release of their band’s new EP, Diatribe via Sliptrick Records.
The clean singing certainly doesn’t dent the heaviness that Malum Sky are all about. Deep rooted riffing, bass chugs and a slamming drum beat showing off a techy style of metal with elements of melody thanks to the previously mentioned vocals. It’s those that give Diatribe an epic kind of feeling as Year if the Rat soars and Borrower haunts. The rhythm of the latter is particularly thrilling as it sees the guitars screech and squeal alongside a crashing drum beat.
The Coil and Eye Above continues Malum Sky’s impeccable ability to smoothly work their progressive style into recognisable metal tracks. Easily the most daring tracks of the EP as they follow no set path but are built on a strong foundation on interesting melody and catchy heaviness, particularly in the latter of the two.
The title track closes things out with more of the same. Solid guitar riffing that lines up the shots for the vocals to knock down. A drifting finish that compliments an excellent release.
