Single Slam: Soundness of Mind by Fractions

Fractions formed in 2010 when members of several local bands got together to create new music, which progressed into the band. After a few years of writing material, Fractions completed their debut live show in March 2013. A few more shows and some further member changes led to the creation of the current line-up.

In late 2015, they played with such bands as Mage, Internal Conflict, Resin, In Search of Sun, Ramage Inc. plus many more.

Towards the end of 2016, Fractions began recording their self-produced 5-track EP ‘Forces’ which was released in the Summer of 2017 to massive positive responses.

They then reached the final of Leicester’s Metal 2 the Masses 2017 which was held on the main stage at the iconic De Montfort Hall, as part of the 2017 ‘Uprising Festival’. Playing to a strong audience, their show was met with critical acclaim. Guitarist Chris Johnson was awarded best guitarist of the competition and received an endorsement with Stone Wolf guitars for his efforts.

Later in the summer of ‘17 the band joined the Enso Management roster, progressing on to play numerous dates around the country supporting both underground & recognised artists, with the most notable being Raging Speedhorn. The pinnacle of 2017 was the band achieving a main support slot call up for tech- metal heavyweights Tesseract on their late summer Russia dates.

The band then started 2018 strongly by being added to the Vocalzone, Newtone strings and London Drumstick Co’s rosters of artists, completed a UK headline tour in May & performed at TECH-FEST UK 18’ receiving great reviews.

Which brings us to 2019 and the release of their new single Soundness of Mind. Out on January 29th 2019, vocalist Chris Hare explains what the single is about:

“Soundness of mind delves into paranoia, that ever-present nagging feeling that everyone is scheming behind your back, the feeling that your life is almost like a play, nothing is real and everyone is fake. The feeling that even those you hold close are secretly laughing at you. But it’s all in your head, and you need to realise this in order to change”

Six and a half minutes long, Soundness of Mind is a fascinating listen. One that begins with trippy sounding guitars and subtle vocals that have a little of the ‘Tool’ about them. There’re intricacies in the rhythm as it keeps you slightly off balance. Then it gets kicked up a notch with a hair-raising and sharper turn from the guitars as well as a little bit of bass chug.

It continues to grow with harsher vocals stepping in to give a more modern deathcore sound as the beat gets heavier and heavier. Imaginative with impressive scope, if this is your first-time experiencing Fractions (as it is for us) there is no doubt you will come away wanting to hear more!
