EP Review: ChuggaBoom – Trinity (Self Released)

Communicating solely through binary chugs composed by tabulating rude phrases translated from Morse code. The masked quintet have been ordered by The ChuggLord to present you with another offering of (arguably) original material in the form of a 6 track EP entitled “Trinity”.

“Trinity” touches on real life, relatable themes such as: infiltrating the Illuminati, tips on dealing with inappropriate arousal, coping with the tribulations of growing up and, more contentiously, the band’s long-standing beef with electronics giant Sony.

Trinity will be released on October 31st 2018.

Playing an energetic style of metalcore with a bit of technicality to the riffs, ChuggaBoom’s new EP is a fiery 6-track release. One that combines plenty of traditional metalcore elements, such as a duel vocal style with high energy hooks. There is a lovely amount of fire in opener Phony, in particular the harsher vocals spitfire approach. It’s a solid enough if uninspired start.

That’s not the case with Growing Pains though, a vast improvement. Opening with keyboard melody and clean vocals, it breaks down into an absolutely raging level of metalcore heaviness. A pit opener if there ever was one, ChuggaBoom show off what makes them standout from the crowd here. Thrilling and even a bit catchy.

The quality choruses built around oddities in the riffs, ferocious vocals and insane level of percussion continues into Awkward Erections, The Song that Saved Your Life and Illumiparty. Each track is fired off at a pace that defies sense.

ChuggaBoom have crafted one of the finest metalcore releases of the year here, simply by being better then everyone else. They layer their music with rhythm that puts them on par with the best in technical riffing while never losing sight of their desire to melt faces with pure heaviness. The final track, What’s the Time!? is confirmation of that.
