Album Review: Third Island – Omelas (Self Released)
Based in Limerick, Ireland, post metal/doom band Third Island formed in 2015 and have since been busy honing their craft resulting in Omelas, their debut album out now on CD, digital download and streaming services.
Drawing from a wide array of influences that include doom, post rock, shoegaze, sludge and stoner rock, Omelas is treat for the mind. Dark, moody and filled with atmosphere, it certainly isn’t your conventional post-metal release.
In fact what Third Island produce here is a mournful epic that touches on such a wide array of exciting and memorable heaviness that all you can do is sit back, shake your head slowly and marvel at the excellence on show.
After a killer start with the huge sounding doomy title track, things quiet down ever so slightly with the melodic verses of The City. Less about rage, more unbridled and brooding anger. It’s there, under the surface and threatening to erupt at any moment.
Procession delves deeply into the pit of doom to bring a methodical and filthy sounding track. The mix of gothic-toned clean vocals with gruff and nastier roars alongside riffs as deep as the ocean leaves an impression.
Rhythm and morose melody built around an undeniable heaviness that is fresh and exciting, The People, Locked Away and Visitors moving the quality up a notch. There is no denying the impact that Third Island are having on your psyche as they grow in strength. With music this raw and open you have to believe it and they will make worshippers of all who listen.
