Album Review: Petrichor – No Silver Lining: A Return to Rain (Self Released)

Petrichor will release ‘No Silver Lining : A Return to Rain’ on May 25th 2018. It sees the doom metallers return to their debut album Rain with some fresh takes on the older material.

An opportunity to underline the first chapter in their history and rekindle interest for a second album next year. It features four tracks from the Rain, re-worked and re-recorded and a completely brand-new track.

It’s the new track that opens the album. Called This Too Must Die it features guest vocals from Vickie Harley. A mournful vocal duet, the doom heaviness opposite piano melody is eye-opening stuff. If this is what we can expect from the next album then Petrichor could really leave their mark within the metal world.

The following four tracks are reworked and recorded from the band’s debut, Rain. Drown the World’s slow doomy procession gets under the skin while the heavily gothic-toned vocals give off the impression of a minister preaching fire and brimstone to his congregation.

As the Dark Steals is an ode to decay while We Are the Fire is a pagan revenge story and a stark challenge to religious authority the world over. A faster and more beat-driven track, the dark tone that sits in the background is a grim reminder of the song’s theme.

The album closes out with Nihilist, the longest track on the album at nearly 16 minutes. A crushingly heavy and slow doom metal start gives way to faster and more traditional metal before ending in darkness.
