Album Review: Coiled Around Thy Spine – Shades (Self Released)

Coiled Around Thy Spine are an American-Italian melodic death metal band from Turin, Italy. Their debut album is called Shades and was released on April 14th 2018.

Melodic death metal bands are in high supply and some of the older bands in the genre have set the bar quite high in recent times. So making any kind of lasting impression for a young and fledgling band is no easy task. Many come, many go but few stick around. That, going off the nine tracks of Shades, won’t be a problem for Coiled Around Thy Spine.

Getting it right, this is an album filled with scorching riffs, exciting solos, brutalising drumming and the perfect accompaniment of harsh vocals. The energetic effort is so listenable, the hooks digging deeply and each switch or direction change proving to be just as important as the last.

[God Mode: On] is a frantic and heavy start, an attention grabber before Dissected shows off the more melodic style of the band with an impressive chorus. The shackles are off and the confidence is clear as Coiled Around Thy Spine Fire off track after track of catchy metal and feel good melodies.

We have How Freedom Dies, which is up there with the best of modern melodic death metal with a screeching solo to boot. The title tracks slower groove is equally impressive with the vocals reaching demonic levels of gutteral. Then The Sick Game makes no attempt to not be anything but a head-crushing slab of heaviness.

Wrapping up with a bit of an epic. Safe’s soft strumming start gives way to striking rhythm and some of the heaviest drumming heard on the album so far.

A brilliant debut. These guys could be huge!
