Live Review: Coilguns at The Underworld, London (28/03/18)
Having released their new album, Millennials only a week ago, there is a lot of excitement in The Underworld for the insane bludgeon of noise that Coilguns spray out. The album is a chaotic listen (read our review here) and the hope is that the energy shown on the record translates live.
Well, the good news is that it does. In fact, watching Coilguns, in particular frontman Louis Jucker, is almost hypnotic. The man is like a combination of Cedric Bixler-Zavala (At The Drive-In) and Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the Machine) throwing himself around the stage with complete abandon.
He leaps around, grabs fans in the front row, races around the venue and lies down on the floor amongst the sweaty crowd. It’s thrilling to watch.
The Underworld might only be half full but the band and the people watching make sure the walls are vibrating with noise. Coilguns are loud, their music deafeningly brutal. It’s chaotic noise but it’s exciting stuff. Their music seems to have designed for small, sweaty venues as the likes of Millennials and Self Employment Scheme sound incredible.
As Jucker himself says, trying to label this band is not easy, they embrace it all. It’s heavy metal, hard rock, incandescent synth, ferocious hardcore, progressive….you name it, Coilguns are playing it. For 45 minutes they show London just why their name is spoken with such reverence.
