Album Review: Abjection Ritual – Soul of Ruin, Body of Filth (Malignant Records)
Out on April 6th 2018 via Malignant Records Soul of Ruin, Body of Filth is the new record from Abjection Ritual. Soul of Ruin, Body of Filth is a vast progression from past releases, incorporating guitars, bass and a live drummer into their arsenal.
The industrial sound that Abjection Ritual play is one that can certainly be called diverse. A hybrid of visceral heaviness and caustic doom sludge. The gloomy intro sets the scene nicely as Body of Filth then takes over with it’s eclectic beat and heavy electronica. The switch to crushing doom comes out of nowhere but vastly lifts the track.
Any preconceptions are left in tatters as Blood Mother delivers a lesson in doomy heaviness and industrial oddities. Try classifying Abjection Ritual’s sound if you want but it’s pointless. It’s a myriad of noise but structured well.
Don’t let the industrial/electronica references put you off, this is dark and heavy stuff that fits perfectly along with the nastier injections of metal. Even when it’s pretty much just oppressive effects that belong in a horror movie (Deathbed Conversion, Carnassial Passage) it fits the theme and tone of the album perfectly.
The best track on the album comes in the form of Ruin. A wickedly enjoyable track that flirts with atmospheric black metal before slipping slowly into the doomy gloom.
An utterly fantastic piece of work that ends with one final lengthy journey into madness. Old Sins’ opening vocals screams and fuzzy low sound is astonishing, something that almost seems ripped straight out of hell.
