Album Review: King Goat – Debt of Aeons (Aural Music)
One of British doom metal’s most exciting young bands, King Goat are back with their long-awaited second album. Debt Of Aeons will be released on the 20th April 2018 via Aural Music and follows from the band’s critically acclaimed debut LP, Conduit. Our review of the debut can be read here.
Understanding perfectly what it is to be a doom band, King Goat’s new album is 7 tracks of momentous, deep, dark, thrilling, heavy and mournful metal.
The soaring and clean vocal mixed with earth-shattering riffs and bass that weighs down heavily on you is wonderful and enlightening. Opening track Rapture puts every other doom release this year to shame.
After such a killer start, it’s almost impossible to fathom that King Goat could better it but they manage it with the Sabbath-esqe darkness of Eremite’s Rest. The amount of quality gothic riffs that are on show is startling.
The brilliance of the doom masters continues with the awe-inspiring title track before Psychasthenia ups the melancholy vibe with a short piece of haunting melody. Consider the latter track a momentary return to reality before King Goat grab you by the ankle & drag you back into their world.
Doldrum Sentinels is arguably the highlight of the album though with a spectacular number of tempo changes & tonal shifts. It shows that when King Goat want to get really heavy they can get really, really heavy.
The longest track of the album (over 10 minutes) finishes things off in a rambunctious & satisfying way. The confidence in King Goat seeping through lifting the mind, body and spirit. On that note, the chains are broken and you’re free to go but like many a sufferer of Stockholm Syndrome, you won’t want to leave.
One of the best albums of the year.
