Album Review: Skeletal Remains – Devouring Mortality (Dark Descent Records/Century Media Records)

Californian death metal act Skeletal Remains will release their forthcoming third studio album, entitled Devouring Mortality. It’s out on April 13th via Dark Descent Records in North America and Century Media Records for the rest of the world.

Vocalist/guitarist Chris Monroy states:

“We are extremely excited and eager for the release of ‘Devouring Mortality.’ Having the opportunity to work with Dan Seagrave on the artwork was a dream come true for us. Skeletal Remains introduce Devouring Mortality with a chugging riff before a disgusted yelp roars out. Ripperology is a filthy sounding track offset by the flashes of classic sounding screeches of guitars!

The pace is increased for Seismic Abyss and it’s here that Skeletal Remains show just why they are such a powerful force in death metal. Not sticking to the formula, the changing tempos and thrash-like riffing perks the ears up.

The guitar solos that crop up in the likes of Catastrophic Retribution, Torture Labyrinth, Grotesque Creation and Internal Detestation add more layers to the crushing heaviness. All while the circle-pitting manginess surrounds and destroys. This is an album that grabs the death metal baton, flips off the rest and races away. Sounding fresh and modern, Devouring Mortality is one that is going to be making plenty of top lists at the end of the year.
