Album Review: Facing the Gallows – Dead Mindset (604476 Records DK)

The 20th February 2018 saw the release of Dead Mindset, the highly anticipated new album from Johannesburg’s metal titans Facing the Gallows. An album that blends elements of Metalcore, Punk, Thrash and Hardcore.

Kicking off with the hardcore groove of Pessimist, Facing the Gallows make an instant impression with blast beats, ferocious riffing and metalcore vocals. It’s a strong start that sets up an album filled with heavy metal weight perfectly.

That same bouncy hardcore groove mixed with thrash-based heaviness, metalcore riffing & blazing vocals continues into the more melodic Illuminate, the skull-crushing Doom II and the tremendously enjoyable Tides of Terror.

With only half the album over, it becomes clear that Facing the Gallows are at the front of the metalore/hardcore pack & Dead Mindset is a serious contender this year. Their ability to blend inventive riffing, memorable hooks, hardcore heaviness & metalcore melody is very impressive.

Nowhere is that better exemplified then on Virginia, up there as the best track on the album.

The latter half of the album keeps the good vibes going with the brilliant gang-vocal shouts of Bad Blood, the intense breakdown of the title track, the thrash-heavy Feed the Flies and the fist-pumping finale of Opportunist.
