Album Review: Fissure of Riddles – Nemea (Self Released)

Hailing from the South-Coast of England, Progressive sludge-metallers Fissure of Riddles released their brand new album, Nemea on January 20th 2018.

Opening with the unsettling sound of guitars that are heavy on the sound of fuzzy feedback. The first track Glacial Retention slides in sombre melody, eerie & croaky vocals before erupting into an exciting post-metal style of music. It’s a mind-blowing start.

The progressive heaviness that Fissure of Riddles promise rears it’s pretty head on the thumping rhythm of Ignorance is Blessed before the epic 12-minute Flensing the Dragon wows with its inventiveness that transcends all you know of sludgy metal. Crushing heaviness, soft melody & a cold undertone ensures that this is a track that will stay with you long afterwards.

It’s simply stunning that Fissure of Riddles then follow that up with Scrumps, a head-banging slab of metal that mixes soaring clean vocals with ferocious death metal gruffness & roars.

Nemea is an album filled with lengthy tracks that fly by in an instant, tracks that deliver detailed walks through swampy lands all while providing the soundtrack to your suffering. The progressive efforts of Paleozoic, the huge sounding riffs of Drown our Bilge and the no-nonsense approach of E.D.O.S keep things ticking along nicely. Before Hauling finishes off a stunning release with its post-metal melody, flashes of heaviness & intense guitar soloing.
