Band Interview: Crypitus – Revisited

Back in June 2017 we spoke with Vermont based death, thrash and black metal influenced band, Crypitus! You can read that original interview here. We then reviewed their EP, Exhibit 1: Prelude To The Dead World in October 2017 & you can read our review of that here. We’re now pleased to bring you an updated interview with the lads.

Crypitus 6

1. How did you get started as a band?

Pete: Doug and I were roommates and jammed for a bit to stuff he wrote. We decided to find a drummer and Zach popped up on Facebook.

Joe: I joined after a friend introduced me when they looking for a bassist.

Zach: When I joined, Doug and Pete were already jamming together. I was desperately searching the internet for musicians to jam with and Pete was the first one to respond, with Doug in tow.

Doug: Crypitus was an idea I attempted a year earlier that failed to go much more than open mics. Pete inspired me to get the project moving again after he picked up on some of the songs, and now here we are!

2. How would you describe your sound?

Pete: We’re a mixture of progressive death metal and jazzy thrash.

Joe: Proggy thrash metal.

Zach: Slightly progressive, psychedelic thrash metal with a hint of taco seasoning and a clown suit.

Doug: A thrashy death metal mix unlike others.

3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?

Pete: Death for sure. Some Between the Buried and Me and Animals as Leaders too.

Joe: Old Metallica, Primus, System of a down, Animals as Leaders.

Zach: My biggest influence is Between the Buried and Me, but I also take notes from Blotted Science, Dream Theater, Frank Zappa, and Acid Bath.

Doug: Death, Megadeth, and Dissection.

4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?

Pete: It’s helped immensely. Without the internet we wouldn’t have our name out there like we do.

Joe: I think internet has help a bunch with getting our name out there.

Zach: Small Town bands like us would be nothing without YouTube and social media to get our music out there. The internet has started a musical revolution.

Doug: Seriously getting our name out there would be hard without those platforms.

5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?

Pete: Having bonfires, hiking, watching movies, reading comics and books.

Joe: Playing video games and hanging with family and friends.

Zach: Doug says that I can’t disclose that information to the general public, but I like fishing.

Doug: I like hiking and sleeping.

6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?

Pete: We have some shows booked for next year and a tour for June planned. Maybe hitting the studio at some point.

Joe: We have a tour next year in June with a bunch of shows before that.

Zach: Were working on making a big tour happen for this coming summer. Otherwise we just plan on taking over the world.

Doug: We have a single coming this winter, and a June tour with An Unction in Braille from Western Massachusetts!

We’d like to thank Crypitus for taking the time to speak with us & Stencil PR for arranging it. You can keep an eye on upcoming releases over on Bandcamp & keep up to date with the band over onFacebook. You can also check out some of their music now on YouTube & SoundCloud.
