Album Review: Atomwinter – Catacombs (Trollzorn)
Trollzorn presents ‘Catacombs’, the new album from German old school Death Metal maniacs Atomwinter. The band’s third full-length album is inspired by bands like Asphyx, Bolt Thrower and is out on February 9th 2018.
With a sinister and threatening crashing of instruments, Atomwinter get the death metal party started in some style. Dark riffs, powerful rhythm and voluptuous growls introduce the listener to a meaty amount of concentrated energy.
Carved in Stone, Morbid Lies & Dark Messiah are a trio of tracks that showcase a dark, doomy style mixed with sudden increases of thrashy pace. A raw & diabolical sounding album that has a ‘take no prisoners’ approach to death metal.
If you haven’t submitted by time the thumping bass of Ancient Rites has blazed a trail through your mind then the doom-heavy groove of Gathering of the Undead will have you on your knees pleading for forgiveness.
There isn’t an ounce of melody throughout Catacombs as track after track delivers insane levels of heaviness. It’s a blessing that the album is only 4o minutes long as this level of intensity is pretty full on. Even the slower doomier moments such as the first couple of minutes of Funeral of Flesh still weigh you down like a block of concrete tied to your foot as you sink into the water.
The filthy sounding record closes out with the culmination of an intense beating suffered by the listener. One handed out with glee by Atomwinter.
