Album Review: The Dead Centuries – Race Against Time (Self Released)

The Ottawa trio of The Dead Centuries, an instrumental prog metal band, will release their debut album ‘Race Against Time’ on January 26th 2018.

Guitarist Adam Tremblett comments about the release:

“The album title “Race Against Time” is loosely representative of the experience writing, recording, and preparing the collection of songs. Throughout the process there have been band member changes, last minute rewrites, and several other testing circumstances. These have only served to further determine The Dead Centuries to release a high quality release that truly represents the band as a whole.”

High energy instrumental metal, The Dead Centuries are all about masssive hooks, futuristic riffs & technical melody. Opener Freddie Lounds is rich in skill, showcasing how a trio’s different abilities can combine to make something that sounds so grand & complete.

It’s on the second track, Gotham, that things really come to life though. An absolute screamer of progressive metal that is incredibly catchy, upbeat & satisfying. A twisting, time-altering piece of music. Every instrument just works together perfectly to create a stunning piece of work.

Topping that is no easy task but The Dead Centuries give it a good go with the thumping Reboot, the glorious melodies of Tree Fort & the epic, soaring riffs of Attack of the Mutant. Simply put, there isn’t an average song on this album. Each one offers some new & unique style with some hook that always seems to draw you in.

The final trio of tracks aims to cement The Dead Centuries position as one of the most exciting modern prog-metal acts. Overdrive is a foot-tapping, head-banging pleaser that continues the wickedly exciting riffs & melodies that they’ve made so relevant throughout. Whereas Attack of the Mutant Pt. 2 & Souvenir please in equal amounts with such great metal rhythm that the only thing left to do is sit back, close your eyes & hit repeat.
