Single Slam – Proselytes by ODDHUMS

Spanish metal band, ODDHUMS, have just released a new single called Proselytes via Inverse Records. The sludge and doom styled band released their first EP in 2016. That was called The Inception and it was pretty well received. The band are looking to capitalise on that by quickly releasing another single. This single will feature on their, as yet untitled, full length album to be released by mid 2018.

ODDHUMS formed in 2016 and are Freg on guitars, Keke on drums and Will on the bass guitar and vocals. Proselytes is a natural progression from The Inception and returns to the sludge and doom genre that worked so well for them in their debut. The band look to bring density, crudeness, darkness and heaviness – all attributes that should help define them, as a band, and the sound on the new album.

Proselytes is just over 6 minutes long and is really sludgy. Big distorted bass lines and drums mix with an interesting riff at the beginning. The vocals are echoed and quite far in the background as the bass and guitars rumble along. A switch to almost complete silence, save for a gentle guitar line, tricks you into a false sense of security before and explosion of crunching distortion threatens to blow your head off. The track switches between these little lulls and sudden spikes in volume quite often near the end of the track. It isn’t always an easy listen as you try to get your head around the complex structure of the song.

I quite like it as a song. I think, if this down tuned and meaty sludge/doom isn’t normally your cup of tea, you are probably not going to change your mind off of this track but for fans of those genres, it is like all your favourite elements rolled into one bone crunching but complex package. Proselytes is very heavy and full of depth at times while complex and creative at others and that brings a lot of hope for the new album, when it is ready.
