EP Review: Crypitus – Exhibit 1: Prelude To The Dead World (Self Released)

Released on September 25th 2017, Exhibit 1: Prelude to the Dead World is a three track EP from progressive metal band, Crypitus.

Breakdown doesn’t quite the mark unfortunately, the riffs sounding muted & muddy. It’s not helped by the vocals that seem to be at odds with the beat. The screamo moments of the vocals is perfectly fine but it doesn’t have much in the way of rhythm. There is a later guitar solo that picks things up but it isn’t pushed to the forefront as it should be. The track ends better then it begins with the progressive guitar elements beginning to shine through.

The issues found in Breakdown are not such a problem with the much more rhythmically challenging Tundra. The guitar hooks here are excellent but the droning title repeating vocal line could do with just not being in there. It’s a great song beside that & a vast improvement over what came before.

Thunder ends things on a seriously proggy high. The intensity of the riffing, the intensity of the hooks, the intensity of the rhythm shows plenty of potential in Crypitus. Well worth keeping an eye on.
