Game Review: Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure (Xbox One)
Developed & published by Cowcat Studios, Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure features hand-drawn art & is a throwback to the classic point & click adventures of old.
The story surrounds Bjorn Thonen, an antique dealer from Paris who comes home drunk one night, passes out in bed & is robbed while sleeping. He wakes to discover that a stone tablet has been taken for reasons he doesn’t know. The police aren’t interested so it’s up to Bjorn to find out who robbed him & why.
Interact with your environments, find items & solve puzzles to find out the truth behind the missing tablet. A journey that will take Bjorn from Paris to even more exotic & foreign locations.
Split into 6 chapters, your investigation begins in Bjorn’s apartment where his less then savoury habits are revealed. He’s a slobbish character that can be borderline stupid at times but he has a certain charm. You’ll grow to like him especially the more you interact with other characters.
The bright & colourful hand-drawn visuals look great, giving it a comic book look with lots of hidden detail. Each new location is exciting to see & explore with there always being plenty to see & do.
The game is inspired by the likes of Broken Sword & the Discworld games. The cream of what point & click can be. Those inspirations really come through. The story, an eventual epic end of the world scenario, is very reminiscent of the Broken Sword series while the humour is in the style of the Discworld games (particularly the second).
The game proudly wears its ‘toilet humour’ badge & has a lot of fun with it’s gross out jokes, sound effects & general silliness. Stuff that can get a bit tiresome by the end but isn’t always in your face.
Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure can be completed anywhere between 6 -10 hours depending on your skill & if you’re collecting all the collectables. These come in the form of hidden cookies that offer hints when eaten. There are also a huge number of ‘game overs’ to experience. Some fun, some silly, some pointless but it adds a little extra to the overall game experience.
An experience that is hardly challenging but will have you scratching your head at least a few times. The story is interesting, the gameplay satisfying & the humour just right.
Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure is damn good! Fans of the old school point & click games will totally fall in love with it’s charm. Even you hate point & click games it’s still worth a look thanks to the childish humour & easy to get into gameplay.
