Band Interview: Fire At Will
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are very proud to bring you an interview with the French punk/hardcore crossover band, Fire At Will!
1. How did you get started as a band?
The band was created in 2006 by Mathieu, his brother Laurent, Denis and I.
Mathieu and Laurent were playing in a Punk Rock band and they were looking to play more punk hardcore tunes. I was playing in a band call Up rights (Commitment Records) so we decided to team up and formed this band. We started playing local shows and then recorded our first demo the same year. After we received good, warming feedback we decided to start touring and to record our first album. We had some lineup changes due to personal issues so the band now consists of Mathieu, Antoine and Bastien and I (Quentin).
2. How would you describe your sound?
I think that that we’re a crossover between the punk rock roots (bands like Good Riddance, No Use For A Name, 88 Fingers Louie) and the hardcore stuff (Defeater, Comeback Kid). Our sound kicks off with a very Sainte Catherinesque tune which also happens to be the title track!
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
As I said above, bands like Have Heart, Defeater, Bane, Good Riddance, No Use For A Name, 88 Fingers Louie influenced us a lot. However, we wanted to create something personal and we want people saying: “Hey this is a Fire At Will song!” more than “Hey it sounds like…” ☺
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
A lot of things have changed since we started the band. We knew about Myspace and the start of YouTube. At that time social media weren’t that important for a band’s communication. Bands were growing up on stage with local shows and touring.
Nowadays some bands are more focused on their image than their music but we have to accept the punk rock hardcore “mind changing” in media. Whatever, the most important thing is to stay true to what you are, what you think and what you do on records and stages.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
We have a lot of passions outside the group. For example, we read a lot of comics!. We are also action figurines collectors (Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). We play and we collect a lot of retro video games too!
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We are actually writing new material and we’re expecting to tour a lot in 2018.
Then have our second Japanese tour planned in October 2018 with the legendary Bomb Factory and we’re very excited to go back to Japan. We will be demoing the same year and expect to record a new album in 2019. We really love playing shows so we’re really focused on it!
