Album Review: Mordenial – The Plague (Black Lion Records)
Mordenial make their triumphant return on July 31st 2017 with their second album, The Plague which will be released via Black Lion Records.
Mixing melodic death metal with a thrash sensibility, The Plague begins things strongly with the self-titled track. A heavy beat with a crunchy groove element shows that Mordenial mean business.
That groove element is what drives the album forward. The thumping drum beat & blistering solo of Daylight is Gone, the crushing riffs of Burning Soil & the meaty catchiness of Salvation keep things exciting.
One of the most memorable things about The Plague are the guitar solos. A major component of every song, they sweep & soar through the mind & lifting the soul up. The ones that comes near the end of No Empathy & Save You All are particularly stunning.
Vocally the album is really on point. The lyrics based around concepts of plague & sung in darkly guttural & evil style that wouldn’t be out of place on a black metal release.
“I am here to save you all, I am here to make you fall.”
The latter half of the album just keeps throwing out groove-infused metal with banging solos. The up-tempo vibe & brutal screams of Follow the Cross, the slow beat & epic solo of Emotions & the intense ferocious finale of The End sees things out in style.
Out of the ten tracks on The Plague there isn’t a bad song amongst the bunch, just damn good metal.
