Single Slam – Victim of Circumstance by Powerflo (Powerflo)

American supergroup, Powerflo, have released a new single from their debut self titled album. That single is Victim of Circumstance. Powerflo will release their album, Powerflo, on the 23rd of June via New Damage Records.

The group is made up of founder Sen Dog (Cypress Hill) on vocals with Billy Graziadei (Biohazard) also adding vocals and guitars. Fear Factory’s Christian Olde Wolbers adds the bass and Rogelio “Roy” Lozano (Downset) is also on guitars. The final member, on drums, is Fernando Schaefer from Worst.

In the band’s own words, they are “distilling heavy metal, hip-hop, punk, and rock into a potent sonic strain”. They certainly have the pedigree in the band to offer something potent. Here’s hoping.

So, Victim of Circumstance is around 2 minutes and 45 seconds long and is seriously infectious. It took about 2 seconds of the crunching, hard hitting intro riff and drum rhythm for me to find myself nodding my head along. The drums sound great and the guitars have an industrial feel to them. Sen Dog spits out lyrics in a rap style but with a metal edge to them. The additional vocals from Billy Graziadei really toughen them up a step further.

The industrial feel continues on with little change ups in the riff keeping the track fresh. A higher tones guitar line that comes in over the chorus is a great addition. A little change up in vocal delivery with a “whoa, oh, oh” backing sounds big and impressive alongside the thumping drums and crunching bass line before a final chorus brings up the end.

I know that the rap styled vocals aren’t for everybody. They aren’t always for me in truth but do give this a go. This is a banging song.  Infectious rhythm, heavy drums and riffs with the dual vocals really make it all feel very fresh and intriguing. A little Bodycount and a lot Biohazard, Victim of Circumstance is a hard hitting, crossover thrash song that should be very popular.

Sen Dog had the following to say about the track ““I wrote the song after watching a few episodes of one of my favorite TV shows, ‘The First 48,’ which is a show about people getting caught up in street life and eventually getting twisted up by the Feds or local law enforcement. This show depicts how fucked up most of the kids in America’s inner cities got it…the loss of innocent life along with outright cold-blooded murderers who have chosen to kill at will. The result of their offenses affects not just their victim’s family but whole communities.”
