Album Review: Deez Nuts – Binge & Purgatory (Century Media)

Deez Nuts have released their fifth studio album Binge & Purgatory via Century Media.

Their foundations rooted in 2007, Deez Nuts meshed hip hop and hardcore punk picking up a healthy fan base. Whilst this Australian quartet may be aiming for that hardcore audience, the sound here is far more nu-metal.

The first few tracks ain’t bad. Opener Binge is an instrumental with a rising drumbeat that peaks interest. Crashing into Purgatory we get heavy beats and rap rock vocals. Antidote follows with more of the same but with an added punk riff. Commas & Zeros is the last of what I consider to be the good on this album. There is a certain amount of self-awareness in the lyrics, with talk of needing inspiration rather than chasing the mainstream.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long to tire of the formulaic nature of the music on offer here. Track after track of uninspired riffs, beats and vocals lead to the album as a whole losing impact. Songs merely pass through the ears and are instantly forgotten. Break Out, Carried By Six and Cakewalk fall firmly into this category.

There is a slight upswing towards the end. Remedy has a nice punk edge, mixing in gang vocals. By this point in a 34 minute/13 track album, it is too little too late. The closer Do Not As I Do has an apt end, it simply fades out.
