Band Interview: Sofasonic
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are proud to being you an interview with UK bluesy rock/party in the sun band, Sofasonic.
1. How did you get started as a band?
SJ and Elliot met working together, Michael and Elliot used to play football together (well when they weren’t injured!!), and Elliot and Niall grew up in the same village. SJ formed the band in 2007, with Elliot joining soon after. Michael joined in 2010 and Niall joined in 2013 which is where we are now.
2. How would you describe your sound?
It started off much more towards the folk genre with a hint of indie rock. The whole dynamic changed when we went from having a female to a male singer. The songs instantly took on a more ‘rocky’ feel. A change in guitarist pushed us away from the indie rock style, on to the sound you can hear us producing today. A rockier, bluesy vibe but still keeping the thoughtful melodies from our folky days!
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Deaf Havana (Niall), The 1975 (Niall), Bruce Springsteen (Niall), Queens of the Stone Age (Michael), Gomez (Michael), Jimi Hendrix (everyone!), Royal Blood (Elliot), Band of Skulls (Elliot), Third Eye Blind (SJ) and The Goo Goo Dolls (SJ) to name a few!
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
For us, the social media effect is great. We share as much as we can and try not to become spam! The ability to live stream a gig so easily is certainly something we use and will be using as much as we can.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Elliot and SJ spend most of their time outside of the band running their businesses. Elliot runs a film and media company, and SJ runs a falconry centre so that keeps them busy! You’ll tend to find Michael watching or playing some kind of sport and is a big fan of Saracens rugby club. Niall is Mr Music and is usually found watching a local band letting us know who is the next big thing!
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We’re off on our first ever European Tour and have 6 gigs in 10 days in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. In even bigger news is that our first album ‘Get Made’ will be released on the 26th June. If you happen to be near one of our gigs pop in and say hello!
