Single Slam – Caught Up in the Gears of Application by Superjoint (Caught Up…)
Superjoint (formerly known as Superjoint Ritual) have released the title track of their new album, due for release on the 11th of November. That album, Caught Up in the Gears of Application, will be released on Phil’s own label, Housecore Records. The track of the same name, exclusively premiered on Loudwire a little earlier today.
It is a short track, about 2 minutes and 40 seconds long, but it is a pretty brutal punch to the face. It starts off with an unnecessary burp but then the dirty, low toned riff starts before Phil begins screaming in maniacal fashion over the top, think more death metal than his usual style. The verse and chorus blend seamlessly in to one another as the track continues its assault on your ears. Some wavy guitar and bass lines add a little flavour in the background a little further in before the song breaks down into an even sludgier sounding riff and cymbal heavy drumming.
Phil’s more familiar voice joins in now over a great background rhythm. In fact, this rhythmic section here is brilliant, the very best of Superjoint. It soon picks up the pace and angst again though, returning to the dark and dirty riffs and death metal growls heard nearer the beginning before a sudden stop with a shout of “Caught Up in the Gears of Application”.
Love or hate them, it is astonishing how much they pack into two and a half minutes really. For me, this is the best track released from the new album so far. It is a real punk, hardcore metal track that is packed full of Southern groove and sludge. Phil sounds as good as he ever has and the album, based on these tracks, should be a great one. It won’t change the world or break in to any top ten lists anywhere I guess, but it will still be a damn good record to drink to, mosh to and listen to.
Phil has previously said the following about the new album –
“The overall theme means many things, or no things, but there is an underlying message regardless, about how modern technology — computers and all that comes with them, mainly — has affected our lives. As a musician, it has affected my life both negatively (music being stolen) and positively (being in touch with fellow musicians around the world and staying visible). But when looking at the broader spectrum, computer-land has given everyday people a platform in which to bellow like carnival barkers about anything and everything, humdrum or political, whether qualified or not, some with good intentions, some with disingenuous intentions and some with ideas that lay somewhere in the middle, creating a mishmash of results.”
A solid rock song with some good moments and a few great moments. It is everything Superjoint promise to be though, being full of angst and full of attitude and while at times they can sound messy, it works for me.
