EP Review: Fomented – Bitter and Miserable Beings (Self Released)

Fomented, the brand-new metal band that features Kieran Scott (DeathCollector & Ashen Crown) and Sy Taplin (Ex-Savage Messiah) have released their debut EP, ‘Bitter and Miserable Beings’.

A new and aggressive sounding band that takes elements of hardcore and mixes that intensity with death and thrash heaviness. Fomented gave us a taste of what we could expect on this EP with the first single, What Can I Change? A track that delivered garish heaviness, meaty and manic, with moments of genuine unpredictability. It was a grim listen upon release and time hasn’t made it any easier on the ears, as it opens this EP in filthy fashion.

Filthy but lovable, that’s Fomented and with Tempus Fugit, they get even more aggressive sounding. In fact, the word that comes to mind is ‘thuggish’, especially when vocalist Kieran Scott is just roaring words like ‘fuck’ and ‘shit’. It’s that kind of music. A visceral style of metal, just like The Predator, which is powerful enough to make you a god damned sexual Tyrannosaurus.

Got neck ache yet? If not, Eigengrau will fix that with its raucous riffs, throbbing bass, and pounding drums. It’s an ‘in your face’ listen that encourages some deep head banging, and while the finale of Captain Sildy Pants has plenty of thick and sinewy tones to ensure the neck muscles will be burning sharply come the end, it’s not what anyone will remember about this finale.

Why? It’s because Captain Slidy Pants is fucking weird, and a strong example of the evolved musical palette of its members. A track like this had more in common with the likes of Mr Bungle, and that’s a comparison you would never expect to make. It’s one hell of a challenging listen, even with the undue aggression that exists in it, but it is fascinating, and fun. How cool is that? Heavy fucking noise that puts a smile on your face.

A head turning debut if there ever was one, while the sum of all Fomented parts are familiar, it’s what they do with them that counts.
