Album Review: Nomadic Rituals – Fust (Cursed Monk Records)

Nomadic Rituals are back with their fourth album, ‘Fust’. A record that points the finger directly at humanity, highlighting its flaws and attitudes toward catastrophe and corruption. It will be released on March 14th, 2025, via Cursed Monk Records.

Piling on an inordinate amount of weight, as per usual, with their latest tome. Nomadic Rituals show just what growth means. Where all the sludgy and doomy parts are familiar, liable to crush, but the power trio have refined their sound to a sharp and stabby point.

Six tracks long with over forty minutes of music that drags the mind into the deepest and darkest of mires. Primordial and raw, yet with a clear focus that means it’s not just ‘heavy for heavies sake’. Unexpectedly, and delightedly, Nomadic Rituals have reached into creative depths and dragged out the wriggling innards of numerous genres. It might, obviously, sit within two, but as the record unfurls itself, the true horror emerges, and it is special.

It is a tome though and each track is a gruelling experience. From the thick and vicious intensity of Nothing Left to Call Home, which has manic bursts of energy, to the overwhelming lethargy and ugly savagery of The Rot. From beginning to end, this album suffocates and try as you might, the filth will take over the mind, body, and soul. Yet, it is so damn appealing. Nomadic Rituals’ approach is so measured, that tracks like Boundless Formless and Fault in the Process, with their combination of viscus riffs, thumping drums, and scowling vocals, can be infinitely appealing.

Or maybe that says something about what appeals to me, or you. There is no shying away from the extreme nature of this album, and detractors of doom and sludge won’t find anything to change their mind here. Except, maybe, the intriguing experimental and psychedelic edge that Beneath Black Skies has. Just more Nomadic Rituals goodness.

It’s not for everyone, but everyone that enjoys wallowing in thick filth that slowly, but effectively, steals the mind, body, and soul, will love this.
