Lacuna Coil – Sleepless Empire (Century Media Records)

Creative, interesting, and anthemic, what more could anyone want from this band?

Bleeding Through – Nine (Sharptone Records)

Looking back, embracing their past, and using it to make their modern sound more complete. It is metalcore through and through, but rather than sound like a band playing ‘catch-up’, this album serves to remind all about the power that they have.

Midland Railway – Midland Railway (Self Released)

It’s a short listen, but with that comes an ‘all killer, no filler’ feeling. Midland Railway have tried to deliver the very best of themselves and so much of it sticks in the mind, for all manner of reasons. Least of all, just how ruddy infectious each and every track is.

Decline of the I – Wilhelm (Agonia Records)

Not just blackened to its core, this new Decline of the I album comes weighted down by sombre melody and dark atmosphere. It’s black metal, there is no denying that, but it’s in an evolved form that oozes horrible and harsh atmosphere, to the point where it starts to transform into post.

Warlung – The Poison Touch (Heavy Psych Sounds)

Featuring gargantuan riffs, hazy stoner-infused groove, the weight of doom, the energy of rock, and the atmosphere of psychedelia, Warlung’s new album is a trippy listen, but one that fills the heart and soul with warmth. Their approach, while familiar to those who like their rock to have a bit of the flavour of burning incense, is one based in anthems. Warlung, for all their varied ideas, have gone the catchy route.

Indian Nightmare – Banished into Endless Chaos (High Roller Records)

Indian Nightmare Banished Into Endless Chaos Cover

Indian Nightmare deliver 3 songs of impressive energy and creativity mixing moments of thrash, traditional heavy metal and gothic punk to deliver a pretty unique sound. It sounds great on record, but you feel this is music that excels in a live environment. It’s just fun.

Hangman’s Chair – Saddiction (Nuclear Blast)

Rightfully considered a giant within the melancholic doom rock and metal world, Hangman’s Chair return with an album that embodies their inherent heavy beauty. An album that is unflinchingly honest, as most would expect, and an album that stares into the darkness, refusing to blink.

Blood Cult – We’re Gonna Take Your Soul (Self Released)

Now, if your initial reaction to hearing the term ‘redneck black metal’ is to scoff, be warned, Blood Cult truly are a unique sonic experience that combines southern rock, blues, and country/western with black metal. Yes, this is not a joke, and to make it even more absurd, it comes coated in old-school heavy metal Satanic vibes.

Necrodancer – Acts of Chaos Require Halberds and Late Night Sandwiches (Frozen Records)

A spitting and snarling blast of ugly punk noise blended with black and roll aspects and with a ‘tongue in cheek’ approach. This new EP is for the scuzzy. For those that like to lurk in dark places, crawl around in the filth and get a bit weird, here and there.

Savage Lands – Army of the Trees (Season of Mist)

Savage Lands Army of the Trees artwork

The album is an easy listen with nothing happening musically that is overly challenging or groundbreaking but, in part due to the massive number of members and guests, there is a whole heap of variety and creativity on offer.

Greybeards – Out of the Red (Rexius Records)

Rock music in its most memorable form, there’s nothing game changing here, but that doesn’t mean everyone can’t have a mighty fine time with a bunch of tracks that guarantee the body will groove and move.

Hands Like Houses – A T M O S P H E R I C S (Civilians)

Hands Like Houses are a very talented band. There’s a lot to get through, a lot to experience, but it is one that fans of top-notch alternative rock will keep coming back to.

The Nightmares – Fire in Heaven (Venn Records)

It’s not the most exciting of listens, and sometimes it just doesn’t hook as well as I’d have hoped for, but it is still an enjoyable album with some really strong tracks.
