EP Review: Sypha – Borderland (Self Released)

Potent Brighton, UK metallers, Sypha, will release their debut EP, ‘Borderland’, on January 24th, 2025.

Pick any positive word you want, it applies to this debut EP. It’s a great release with three absolute bangers that shows how much potential there is in this band. Sypha have arrived, and now it’s time for the world to take note.

Something that sure is made easier with anthems. Anthems that have the perfect balance of heaviness and melody. Anthems that have accessible choruses, but also have a dark grittiness to them too. It also helps when there’s a theatrical air which is the case with the excellent Dirty Floor. Although if we’re talking about the best of the trio of tracks, it comes next with Limbo (See you on the other side).

Fast, energetic, and furious sounding, this is the kind of intensity that makes all metalheads happy. Especially as it is so damn infectious too. Sypha’s confidence is startling, and they already sound like a band with several high-profile albums/EPs under their belt. Which is a thought-process strengthened by the pit-inducing head banger that is The Afterparty. It’s a gathering everyone wants to be at, so make sure you’re early otherwise you risk being left out in the cold.

Now apply that analogy to Sypha as a whole and you’ll start to understand that they’re on course to be one hell of a force in the UK scene. An EP of the year contender? For real.
