EP Review: Hanry – Disruption (Pelagic Records)
French post-rock/post-hardcore instrumental six-piece Hanry will release their new EP, ‘Disruption’, on January 10th, 2025. The digitally released EP is Hanry’s first collaborative effort with Pelagic Records.
Their reputation for creating atmospheric and elaborate prettiness is notable, but it’s the depth that Hanry can sink with their experimental instrumental music that truly makes them a band few will forget once heard. The proof? This wonderful EP and its bright and brilliant blend of melody, rock, and electronica.
Beginning with Radiance, Hanry’s subtle and quiet melodic approach creates a strong feeling of relaxation. Even as it begins to grow, ambient electronica adding a unique feel to things, and transforms (eventually) into something more intense with a heady hit of post.
Ether follows that stunner with even more laidback passion, even more dreamy harmony, and even more exciting rock-infused rhythms. Hanry continue to show just how broad their imagination is, and how dramatic things can be, especially when they’re unleashing gorgeous shoegaze-infused tracks like Zénith (Tape#2). The emotion in this one is thick and extremely affecting.
Finally, there is Intermission, not only the longest track on the EP, but the most uplifting, exciting, experimental, and vibrant of all. An absolutely glorious listen that has you feeling like you’re floating on air, buoyed by gusts created by Hanry, and soaring high and low across the track’s electrifying structure. It’s amazing, but it’s just one more amazing track on an amazing EP. Quite simply, a very early contender for EP of the year.
