Interview: Sypha (Written)
Potent UK metallers, Sypha, have announced themselves with their engulfing new single and video, Limbo, out now. The track is lifted from the band’s blistering debut EP, Borderland, which arrives on Friday 24th January. In this interview we get to know the band a little better.
1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
Hello, thanks for having us! We’re Sypha, an energetic metal band from Brighton, UK. We all met during uni and quickly discovered that we all had very similar interests and aspirations in music. After a few trips to the pub and some initial band practices, Sypha was born!
2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?
Our sound blends classic hard rock with modern metal, creating a heavy yet catchy listening experience. With our latest tracks and new EP BORDERLAND, our sound has evolved into darker tones, with riff-driven force, while still holding on to hard rock’s foundational grooves.
3. What’s currently going on in your camp? New releases? Tours? Etc.
In January 2025 we’re releasing our debut EP, called ‘BORDERLAND’, after that we’re looking forward to writing more music, and going on our first UK tour, as well as performances in the festival scene!
4. What has been the most positive experience of making music to date for you?
Our first music video release, ‘World’s End’ reached over 55,000 views on YouTube and we had so many great comments from people from all over the world. It was so amazing and touching to see that a song that we created in our living room, reached someone over in South America and beyond!
5. Likewise, what has been some of the more challenging aspects and how have you overcome them?
I think similar to a lot of smaller, grassroot bands, the hard part is maintaining the motivation to keep going when things feel quiet or slow. The highs of being in a band are amazing, but the lows can feel equally as intense at times.
6. How do you handle the modern expectations of being in a band? Always online, having to put out content constantly, your success measured in likes and follows?
It’s very difficult at times, especially as we all have full-time jobs that (unfortunately) take time away from the band. But through social media we’ve managed to reach and connect with so many people across the world and make some amazing connections. In this generation, social media has just become a part of the job description now.
7. What’s something that really ‘grinds your gears’ about the industry/business these days and what would you propose is done to combat it?
As a musician, you’re not expected to do it for the money, but do it for the passion. We have a huge amount of love and passion for our music, but recording, touring, buying merch etc all costs a lot of money. We’d love for some more government funding in grassroots music, and more financial help for small bands to help them grow.
8. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support your music?
Come to a show, buy a t-shirt or just say hi! Our favourite thing about playing live is connecting with our audience and making new friends. As long as people keep coming, we will keep going.
9. Outside of the music, what do you do to relax?
We’re all very into video games! We love playing The Legend Of Zelda, Castlevania (that’s where our band name comes from), Animal Crossing, and Final Fantasy.
