EP Review: DYSEASE – Molae Mortis (Self Released)
German death metal quintet, DYSEASE have released their brand-new EP, ‘Molae Mortis’. The follow-up to their 2022 EP, ERA of DECAY.
Coated with a thick layer of darkness, DYSEASE’s new EP is as atmospheric as it is heavy, and it’s really bloody heavy. However, that’s just one interesting aspect of their sound and across the four tracks of this beastly effort, you’ll find a band capable of delivering progressive ideas while staying true to the core intensity of death metal.
The depth is on full and garish display from the start, especially with the way the driving rhythm hammers away, on opening track Monuments of Fear. A surprisingly elaborate listen, the excitement around the progressive detail is only matched by the heart-racing fear felt because of the savagery in the vocals.
Then along comes Hypocritical Oath to deliver a pounding and crushing example of death metal ferocity, except the fascinating decision to include sharp melodic guitar moments turns this into one of the more peculiar tracks of all. Before The Path keeps the tone rooted in cold and harsh soundscapes, albeit, warped by a constantly shifting creative line. DYSEASE seem to be going to great lengths to be so much more than what the genre purists would expect.
No bad thing, as it certainly makes for a more attention-grabbing listen, and results in an EP that most will want to hear many times over, just to unpack the layers. Layers that are just as prevalent on the finale of Echoes of Redemption as DYSEASE take some props from the world of melodeath, and infuse an incredible amount of drama into things.
