Chaos Reigns – Sweet Violence (Self Released)
It’s not just the themes around Sweet Violence that are about the contradictions in life, there are contradictions in the music as Chaos Reigns cleverly express vitriolic heaviness and speed while also showcasing fragility and beauty in interesting ways. Yes, it’s carnage for the most part, but with layers upon layers of creative differences to the hardcore punk formula, it leaves such an impression.

The Gates of Slumber – The Gates of Slumber (Svart Records)
The Gates of Slumber returning after so long could be seen as a sign of an impending apocalypse, after all, their doom sound comes with the weight and the gravitas of such a scenario. Yet, this is a celebration, as one of the world’s finest doom bands emerges from their slumber and sets about wreaking havoc.
