Album Review: Gutless – High Impact Violence (Dark Descent Records / Me Saco Un Ojo)
Australian death metal band, Gutless, will finally unleash their debut full-length album, ‘High Impact Violence’ on November 22nd, 2024, via Dark Descent Records / Me Saco Un Ojo.
In a year that has seen countless belligerent, brutal, and sickening death metal releases, it takes something pretty special to stand out at this point, and while High Impact Violence isn’t quite up to the task, it does have many moments that hit so hard, the listener will be seeing stars.
A no-nonsense slab of raw and rotted fury, stinking of death and with a bloodlust that is borderline manic, Gutless go for the soft parts of the body with their sharp claws and teeth. Showcasing six tracks of unrelenting savagery delivered via instruments of pure evil. Guitars that flay skin from flesh, drums that pulverise bones, and vocals that cause blood to coagulate in veins; this is the sound of Gutless, with an added rawness that permeates every aspect of the record.
Summing up this album and what Gutless do here feels more like a warning, and it’s a warning that all should heed to some degree. Those fearful of the death metal sound should steer well clear, especially as Gutless aren’t trying to win you over in the slightest. Whereas those who have penchant for a bit of blood and gore need to know that this is more than just a trickle, it’s a figurative drenching.
It’s for the sickos and if that resonates with you, well, you’re already elbow deep in this foul mess, aren’t you?
What more do you need to know? It lives up to its title. The band lives up to its name, mainly because those guts were ripped out by a ruthless beast, and every track lives up to the promise of brutality. Get your fill, but don’t say we didn’t warn you!
