EP Review: Verbannt – Falsche Versprechen (Der Abt Records)
Enigmatic newcomers Verbannt will release their debut EP, ‘Falsche Versprechen’ (False Promises), on November 8th, 2024, via Der Abt Records.
Displaying a potent style of blackened death metal through a politically charged statement, this debut EP from Verbannt focuses on inequality and the harsh realities faced by marginalised communities. A unique perspective to hear and feel, Verbannt shine a bright light on the emotional struggle that many have with exile, alienation, and systemic racism. It is a sobering listening experience, especially as relatability will come in so many different forms.
Regardless of your own personal experiences around the subjects tackled in this EP, all can certainly feel the potency of blackened death metal that calls out discriminatory systems, racism, and the violence embedded in modern societies.
That’s not to say it’s front and centre, so to speak, as the style that Verbannt employ means that on a surface level, the brutal and blackened approach is all anyone needs to hear to enjoy this release. Verbannt is an intense entity and across five tracks it unleashes a barrage of ruthless death metal crossed with haunting black metal heaviness. It is an assault, but it’s one that makes you sit up and pay attention. Wanting to dig a bit more into the detail and through that, learning more about who and what this band is, and what was desired to be expressed with this EP.
It’s far more effective when you do. Not bad for a debut record.
