EP Review: Wizard Tattoo – One of These Knives (Garage Fire Recordings)

Known for blending doom, stoner metal, and psych rock with intricate storytelling, Wizard Tattoo, the innovative creation of multi-instrumentalist Bram the Bard, is poised to make a formidable impact on November 1st with the release of their latest EP, ‘One of These Knives’. Out via Garage Fire Recordings.

The second EP that Wizard Tattoo has dropped this year, but whereas July’s concept EP ‘Living Just for Dying’, picked up where the ‘Fables of the Damned’ album left off, this release looks to capture the dynamism of their debut EP. Something evident by the overall rawer tone that permeates the release.

Even with that, the progressive tone that Wizard Tattoo is renowned for is front and centre across the four tracks of this release. It just so happens to come with a deeper and darker style of doom and metal. Showcased impressively with album opener, Varsak of Man, a track that features the talents of Fausto Aurelius. It’s also track with no small amount of intensity and touches of psychedelia, which leads nicely into the atmospheric A Wizard’s Blade. The clean singing on this track is particularly great.

Remember the track, Wizard Knife Fight (At a Bar), from the debut EP? My Second Knife Fight is a sequel. Which is a fun idea and Wizard Tattoo craft one hell of an enjoyable rocker with this one. Before the EP wraps up with Edge of Reprisal, an instrumental closing piece that touches the soul with haunting cello melodies. It’s a great way to ease things out and regardless of if you think Wizard Tattoo have accomplished their goal of capturing their past with this EP, all can agree it’s a strong listen none the less.
