Swallow the Sun – Shining (Century Media Records)
There’s an intangibility to Shining and what subjects and themes that Swallow the Sun are exploring here. Yet, to the surprise of no-one, this examination of being human comes in the form of deep, epic, and infectious melancholy.

Escuela Grind – Dreams on Algorithms (MNRK Heavy)
Escuela Grind promises extreme noise, and once again, they deliver, for the most part. Some misses, some odd experimentation, and some directions that just don’t work, stop this being an instant classic, but it’s still a very good extreme metal record.

Anderwelt – Transanimalism (Electric Fire Records)
An incredibly talented band, Anderwelt do more in 15-minutes to create vibrant imagery in the mind, than many do in double that time. This is an outstanding listen.

Dawnwalker – The Unknowing (Self Released)
A brave and inspired showcase of creativity, there’s a sense that if only one other person heard this album, Dawnwalker would be satisfied because of what they crafted here. Thankfully, a hell of a lot more than one other person will hear this. It’s an experience that many will desperately want to have and an experience that most will come away glad they had.

Five the Hierophant – Apeiron (Agonia Records)
Offering up a lucidity that only comes after experiencing something so surreal that it causes base fears to emerge, Five the Hierophant’s new album is nearly indescribable. Such is the maddening blend of ideas and the fascinating way in which they are all put together to create a musical experience like little else.

Veiled – SE/CT (Seek & Strike)
An ambitious release, SE/CT is the sound of a band pushing their creative abilities to their limits and still finding new reserves to draw from. It’s a punishingly heavy listen, but with thick layers of dynamic melody and ‘core’ intensity that adds a thrilling layer of catchiness to things.

Ensiferum – Winter Storm (Metal Blade Records)
Filled with fantastical grandeur and folkish wonder, but still impressively focused on the melodic metal side of things, Ensiferum are back, and back with a mighty bang.
