Album Review: Fit For an Autopsy – The Nothing That Is (Nuclear Blast Records)

Fit For an Autopsy’s seventh album, ‘The Nothing That Is’, will be released on October 25, 2024 via Nuclear Blast Records.

One of the best deathcore bands out there who consistently release banger albums, Fit For an Autopsy play it safe with their latest release, but refine what they do to such a sharp point, it’s in danger of blinding the freaking metal world. A succinct ten-track release that hits like a category five storm, showcasing the absolute best of this band from both a heavy and melodic stance.

Both of which come in full force with the opening beast that is Hostage, just try and not head bang to that intro because you will. Yet, what really makes this start so special is the wildness of the guitars and the melodic depth. Fit For an Autopsy showing the youngsters of the deathcore scene how to perfectly balance the sound of crushing heaviness with soaring melody.

More times than not though, the album leaves you feeling like you’ve been in a riot. Especially when a hefty track like Spoils of the Horde comes out with fists flailing and Savior of None / Ashes of All is filled with death-infused fire. To call this pairing furious sounding is to underplay the intensity that Fit For an Autopsy are showing off. The darker tone in the former is awesome, whereas the touches of melodeath in the latter are impressive too. Fit For an Autopsy at their absolute best.

It then won’t come as too much of a surprise to find that the middle part of the album doesn’t f**k around either. Weaker Wolves has a groove to it though, getting nice and stompy when need be. Red Horizon is grim and ugly in places, at least until an ending that just soars. Then the title track comes along to blow everything heard so far out of the water with a brutalising focus on speed and heaviness. That alone would be exciting, but this track has some moments that simply soar too. Fit For an Autopsy at their most exciting.

The latter part of the record continues to bring the heavy, unsurprisingly. After all, this record is all about consistency and Fit For an Autopsy are on fire here. First, being a bit experimental with post-hardcore elements and dreamy melody in Lurch. Then adding some dark cinematic vibes to Lower Purpose, while also delivering the most ruthless of deathcore rhythms. Before getting deliciously gory and violent with the thrilling Lust for the Severed Head. Fit For an Autopsy at their most wicked.

…and then it’s over. Having already blasted the mind into bits, Fit For an Autopsy choose to wrap up this class record with one last explosive effort that sees them push their sound into more dramatic territories. While this isn’t the first time the band has done stuff like this, it’s still a surprisingly dynamic listen. Focused completely, at first, on gloomy melody and clean singing, then bringing a garish intensity to the forefront that transforms things into something more chaotic. Fit For an Autopsy keeping the track sounding quite experimental and creative right up to the end.

It’s an absolute banger of a release, but you already know that, it is Fit For an Autopsy after all.
