Album Review: Feral – To Usurp The Thrones (Transcending Obscurity Records)

Swedish axe-wielding death metal marauders Feral will release their new album, ‘To Usurp the Thrones’ on October 18th, 2024, via Transcending Obscurity Records.

Feral in name, Feral in nature, this new album from the death metal savages promises to be a bounty of brutality, and that is exactly what Feral deliver. An 11-track beast that is hyperactive and chaotic from the start with To Drain the World of Light, to the brutal bloodying that comes from the finale of Stripped of Flesh. There are no surprises to be found here, just quality death metal from a band focused on creating neck wrecking music.

What more do you need to know? That tracks like To Drain the World of Light, Deformed Mentality, and Phantoms of Antiquity also have killer guitar solos? That tracks like Vile Malediction, The Devouring Storm, and Into the Ashes of History burn with garish blackened fire? That tracks like Bound to the Dead, Spirits Without Rest, and Decimated crash and smash with a stupid amount of furious intensity?

How about the utter carnage caused by Soaked in Blood? The shortest track on the album, and also the most brutalising. All so very harsh, heavy, and freaking lovable.

Feral do an immense job of grabbing attention and holding on to it firmly with what this album has to offer. Varied enough to not bore, but still well and truly focused on the sound of ruthless heaviness.

Sure, there’s nothing groundbreaking here, but be under no false illusions, this is the sound of a modern death metal band paying tribute to the past and putting their own emphatic stamp on the style and sound. Putting it really f**king bluntly, they’re a nasty sounding bunch and chances are, you’ll love what they’re doing here too.
