Bleeding Through – Dead but So Alive
Southern California metalcore giants Bleeding Through have debuted a brand new single, ‘Dead but So Alive,’ available now from SharpTone Records.
Commenting on the song, vocalist Brandan Schieppati says:
Dead But So Alive is a more personal song for me. I battle with being bipolar and it something that I am very up front about in my life. This song is about the daily life and sometimes ugliness of mental illness. It takes a strong support system around me to walk this life and I have my family and amazing band around me to make me feel so alive when I sometimes feel so dead.
As powerful as ever, Bleeding Through make their grand return with a manic discharge of brutal speed and heaviness. While the scene they inhabit has become over-saturated, they continue to rise to the top via an old-school focus on ferocity. Where even their melodic tones has an intensity that cuts through.
Seum – Éfrit
Seum, the bass-only sludge band from Montreal, Canada, have released the single, ‘Éfrit’. The 3rd single from their upcoming split album (Conjuring) with Temple of the Fuzz Witch, to be released on Black Throne Productions.
About Éfrit, the band explains:
We had our first drug experiences as kids with Moroccan Hashish. Cheap, mixed with weird stuff – the urban legend claims it was tires – it was a way to escape our daily teenage boredom but it could also take you on the worst paranoid trip. Éfrit is about those days, we used this cunning Arabic demon as a metaphor and it inspired us to write one of our heaviest songs to date: Éfrit chose us as her sons.
When Seum call this their heaviest song to date, no lies are being told. This is a noisy bugger of a track with deep rivets of sludge and a thick infusion of doom thrown in for good measure Yet as punitive as this sound is, Seum’s approach to dark and discombobulating music continues to be hugely compelling. It’s great to hear them expanding their sound here. Check it out here.
Indevth – SICK
South England’s fast rising metalcore band Indevth have today shared their brand-new single, ‘SICK’ – a defiant offering that has an honest outlook on vocalist Sam Culverwell’s dealings with metal health. ‘SICK’ is the first track released since INDEVTH’s early 2024 EP ‘DROWNING’ and their formidable appearance at Download Festival.
Talking on their new single Culverwell shares:
SICK is a track about acceptance, and recognising problems. The last few years I have really struggled with my mental health and there have been times where I have just felt absolutely trapped and consumed by it. and it caused me to be very self destructive to myself and hurt the people I love and in most cases if I had dealt with things better myself a lot of issues could have been avoided easily in retrospect. SICK is really about admitting to myself that I have a problem and nothing will change unless I address issues myself.
It’s great to have them back and back with as much intensity as ever. The sky seems to be the limit for this band and they have been absolutely soaring in recent times. It’s unlikely they will be coming back down to anytime soon though when this is the quality of heavy music that they are putting out there. It’s very harsh, finding the band in an uncompromising place, but retaining their innate infectious quality. Brilliant brutality.
Vermilia – Vakat
Finnish pagan metal artist Vermilia has released her first single, ‘Vakat’, from her forthcoming album Karsikko, set for release in early 2025.
Vermilia explains about ‘Vakat’:
‘Vakat’ draws inspiration from ancient traditions, as in the past, villages used to celebrate ‘Ukko’s Vakkas.’ The song is a pagan hymn of praise and a plea to Ukko, the God of Thunder, to bring rain and ensure a good harvest for the people.
As grandiose as ever, while being quite brutal sounding, Vermilia’s pagan metal sound is at its blackest here. The folk side of things is given a richer vibe by more symphonic aspects, but it’s when Vermilia reaches for epic highs that this track truly takes gold. A truly talented artist. Check it out here.
Battle Born – Magic and Steel
Southampton, UK power metal band Battle Born have shared a new single, Magic and Steel, with an accompanying music video ahead of their forthcoming UK tour in October in support of Tailgunner. Magic and Steel is a previously unreleased track recorded during the sessions for their 2023 debut full-length, Blood, Fire, Magic and Steel.
One of those tracks that can you see why it never made the final cut, but not because of quality. It’s great, filled with all the fun aspects of Battle Born, but is more of a ‘traditional’ heavy metal track and comes across as a bit of a tribute to a specific older era. As a bonus track while we await what comes next, there’s nothing to complain about, especially because it’s such a heart-racing effort. Check it out here.
Saltwound – Severance
Following their recent signing to SharpTone Records, Northern Californian deathcore juggernauts Saltwound have announced their long-awaited, debut full-length album, The Temptation of Pain, will be released on 1st November. Now the band reveals the record’s second single, ‘Severance,’ which features guest Nick Chance of Distinguisher and is accompanied by the turbulent music video.
Commenting on the song’s message, vocalist Spencer Timmons says:
It’s my wish to separate myself from the world in a macro and micro sense. In my personal life and what I see going on, it’s nothing but pain, misery, and things I can’t stand. So, you want to be set free and separated from this darkness. I love music more than anything, but so much of this industry repulses me.
Credit where credit is due, if the goal for Saltwound with this track was to leave you feeling battered and bruised, they have succeeded. This track goes hard from the start, but there’s a measured approach to the instrumental heft, all while the vocals scream and shout in a more chaotic way. The contrast works, especially as the track develops and the tempos shift. One of those tracks that are so heavy, you can’t help but gurn with glee.
Swallow the Sun – MelancHoly
Swallow the Sun have released another new single taken from their upcoming album ‘Shining’ out October 18th via Century Media Records.
Juha Raivio (guitar/keys) comments on the new song:
This song talks about how melancholy can be comforting, safe and even a beautiful place. But when it turns into your God, it will surely kill you.
Mikko Kotamäki (vocals) adds:
I’ve heard these days people call great and catchy songs bangers. Well, this one truly is one.
Who doesn’t love a bit of Swallow the Sun melancholy? Even when it comes in such confusing fashion? It’s clear that this album isn’t the Swallow the Sun of old and they are experimenting here, but so far, it’s not quite resonating. This new effort, a highly melodic and haunting listen, doesn’t set the senses alight (especially as it’s quite Katatonia-like) but it does have an effect. Swallow the Sun do live up the title and deliver something oozing melancholic dramatics. Check it out here.
So Far So Good – What You Did to Her
London hardcore outfit So Far So Good have released their new single, ‘What You Did to Her’. Out now via their own DIY label, Happycult.
Describing the song, So Far So Good says:
The song is about the rising cases of transphobia in the UK and how the turbulent world of online spaces has only stoked the flames for outrage within people who know nothing of the struggles of trans folk. It’s a hard topic to talk about at the best of times. Hence why we haven’t beat around the bush, it’s aggressive – in your face and incredibly unapologetic through and through.
Furious and outspoken, as all the best hardcore metal should be, the newcomers have fire in their bellies and are going for the ‘shock and awe’ approach. However, as chaotic as it is, there’s depth to what they are doing here and it’s clear they have so much more to show than just ‘slamming’ as hard as possible. Although there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that either as they’re more than capable of wrecking s**t.
Le Rox – God’s Run
Up and coming hardcore punks Le Rox have released their new single ‘God’s Run’, an emotionally charged track that delves into the depths of pain, resilience and the struggle for self-acceptance.
From the start this track is manic, but goodness, does it grab the attention. The punky explosiveness of the instruments and the in-your-face style of vocals is awesome. Le Rox manages to express so much in a little over two minutes and leave the listener panting for breath. More please. Check it out here.
Swollen Teeth – Family
Emerging metal force Swollen Teeth have returned with their brand new single, ‘Family’, out now via Blowed Out Records. This new single marks a bold new chapter following their explosive 2021 debut, their self-titled EP.
Swollen Teeth shares:
New flowers bloom only once the wilted return to soil. This is our way of saying WELCOME to the world. FAMILY.
The future is looking brighter and brighter for this band as they continue to develop their experimental metal sound into something more tangible and enjoyable. Here, elements are much better defined and rather than confusing to the point of frustrating as is often the case, Swollen Teeth craft something that makes you head bang. Although that’s not to suggest this is simplified, as the band still find ways to confound and not all of it works. Check it out here.
Bridge Left to Burn – Vile
Bridge Left to Burn has unveiled their latest single, ‘Vile’, a blistering metalcore track that is here to obliterate stereotypes and serve up some serious attitude. ‘Vile’ isn’t just a song; it’s a statement. It’s for every woman who’s ever been underestimated, sidelined, or dismissed. It’s for those who’ve fought to be heard in a male-dominated space and are sick of being told they don’t belong. This is more than music; it’s a declaration of power and a testament to resilience.
Right before the brutal breakdown, ‘Vile’ features a clip from a sexist comment that was made towards the band by a YouTuber, setting the stage for a sonic onslaught that will make you want to throw your horns up and scream. This provocative element underscores the song’s message: a resolute “screw you” to anyone who has ever tried to undermine or diminish the role of women in heavy music.
Says vocalist Ava Sukkar:
We wanted ‘Vile’ to be more than just a song. It’s a statement of resilience and empowerment. By using the clip of the sexist comment, we’re turning negativity into fuel, showing that we won’t be silenced or sidelined. This is our way of saying ‘We’re here, and we’re not going anywhere.’
Out-f**king-standing. Bridge Left to Burn are your new favourite band and all it took was a dynamically-charged piece of furious metalcore called Vile. The subject matter is important, but how they express their feelings on this, is another. Sounding absolutely incandescent with rage, a wonderful melodic chorus can’t diminish the sheer intensity of this beast of a track.
Imperial Triumphant – Eye of Mars
Imperial Triumphant (Century Media) have released a new standalone single with an accompanying video – ‘Eye of Mars’.
Imperial Triumphant comment:
It is seen through the ages that universal truth rises to the top. With this in mind, leaders of civilization are divided in control methods deployed through various mechanisms, some for the sake of humanity and some for the sake of interests that don’t necessarily benefit humanity. The sum total of the entire apparatus then reaches a boiling point, after which time agendas are revealed.
On a much higher level exists that which lies beyond the five senses, beyond the science and materialism matrix. Many sacred texts worthy of protection by the people have endured while existing in relative obscurity as allegory. The knowledge gets passed down through generational cycles and ultimately makes visible that collective connection in all the world and all of us. This lights up the consciousness with a venerable force like electricity and music.
Under the watchful eye, Mars slew the dragon, and seizing its teeth out of the great gaping mouth, scattered them broadcast like seeds unto us.
One of the most creative bands in the entire world, when Imperial Triumphant have new music, everyone pays attention. Expecting something maddening, something devilish, something unique, and something unforgettable. Of course, that is exactly what we get here. Yet, in a moment of hilarity, this is a track with more straight-forward elements. Showcasing the power of their death metal side, and letting a cacophony of insane sounds compliment the intensity, rather than become the focal point. There really isn’t anyone quite like Imperial Triumphant. Check it out here.
Drew Thomas – You, Me & Desire
London based, Nottingham born grit pop artist Drew Thomas has released a cathartic new single, ‘You, Me & Desire’ (out now via Revanche Records). Sharing his musical revival, Drew Thomas explores his discomfort with sexuality and lust during his teenage years. Creating an honest account of the inner desires that can take hold in the heat of the moment, despite their potentially hedonistic and damaging nature.
Speaking about his new single, Drew Thomas comments:
Since I was younger, I’ve always found sexuality and lust really unnerving, hence why I spent the majority of my teenage years terrified of people knowing the real me and relying heavily on trying to make my musical offering as cathartic and honest as possible. You, Me & Desire feels like a revival for me musically but also a really honest account of those inner desires that can take hold of you in the heat of the moment, even if they can be hedonistic and damaging in retrospect.
What an interesting subject to cover and what a catchy way to do that. Drew Thomas’ approach here is rooted in the sound of alternative rock, with lashings of pop and a smidge of punk, just to give it a more robust flavour. The melodies are nice, the rhythms are catchy, his vocals are smooth and easy to listen too, and the chorus delivers. What more do you need to know?
Escuela Grind – Toothless
New England extreme metal powerhouse, Escuela Grind, will release their new LP, ‘Dreams on ‘Algorithms, on 18th October via MNRK Heavy. The band has released their latest single, ‘Toothless’, and its accompanying video, directed by Seby X Martinez for Negative Kitty.
This new Escuela Grind track has problems, most notably the lack of bass, but an infusion of talent within the ranks of the band still manages to make it notable. In particular, garish riffing and an overall guitar vibe that is grim. It, like most of what this band offers, is manic and based in the extreme, but there is a sense that they’re beginning to lean a bit too close to a ‘core’ sound. Check it out here.
Signs of the Swarm – IWONTLETYOUDIE
In the midst of their stacked headline Decade of the Swarm Tour, Pittsburgh, PA Deathcore unit Signs of the Swarm have dropped new single ‘IWONTLETYOUDIE’ — their first original music since 2023’s breakout LP Amongst the Low & Empty.
Reveals drummer and main songwriter Bobby Crow:
‘IWONTLETYOUDIE’ marks the beginning of a new chapter for Signs: a story of an endless cycle of death and resurrection. We like to use the time between albums to explore new ideas and sounds. We did this on the ultra-heavy ‘Unbridled’, the more moshy ‘The Collection’ (featuring guest shouts from Kublai Khan’s Matt Honeycutt and Molotov Solution’s Nick Arthur), and the eerily melodic crusher ‘Pernicious’. ‘IWONTLETYOUDIE’ touches on all of those and more; our goal was to channel the energy of deathcore that got us excited about it in our younger year, so expect the explosiveness of Amongst the Low & Empty but so much more!
Hitting their deathcore stride with a brutalising combo of heavy instruments, ruthless vocals, and intense electronica effect, Signs of the Swarm are on ferocious form here. The pace of this track, delivered by the most pulverising of drum beats and punishing of riffs, is downright dangerous sounding. Yet, all of that feels so natural for this band, especially when it’s capped off by a vocalist who might very well be possessed by a demon. Check it out here.
Bluntnose – Park Bench Throne
As the oceans host the ancient Bluntnose shark, the western city of Gloucester is home to the band of the same name. Today, Bluntnose have delivered their rallying cry to those searching for something new, wanting to turn the tide and break free from their mundane existences. ‘Park Bench Throne’ is the first experience you will likely have with Bluntnose, but it will not be the last.
Bluntnose have a simple message to all who find them:
WELCOME TO THE FRENZY!
A frenzy all fans of alternative metal (and those of a certain age thanks to some retro alt vibes) will want to be part of. Bluntnose grab the attention with their melody but tighten the grip they have with strong bursts of heaviness. It’s easier to call a track like this alternative, just because it mashes up different genres to the point where it truly sounds unique. It’s really impressive, managing to get under the skin in a positive way, while also dealing with topics of loneliness, grief, anxiety and depression in a relatable way. Check it out here.
Devin Townsend – Jainism
Devin Townsend recently announced the release of his forthcoming new studio album ‘PowerNerd’ on the 25th October 2024 (InsideOutMusic). Now he presents a different side to ‘PowerNerd’ with ‘Jainism’, which folloes the release of the anthemic title track last month.
As Devin explains:
This next song was based on my connection to music in the mid nineties. Also the idea of what it means to rend yourself artistically to an unresponsive world in 2024. I referenced The Wildhearts in the chorus, as Ginger is one of our generations greatest songwriters. In preparation for ‘The Moth’, PowerNerd is meant to look back and celebrate the past before moving forward. Thank you for the support…back to work here.
Devin continues to delight and set this new album up as one of his strongest yet, while also showcasing his constant evolution. This new track is a highly experimental listen as Devin plays around with synths and crafts imposing atmosphere. It creates a wave of sounds that wash over the mind warmly, until you get caught in a pocket of intensity and things get a bit heavier. The chorus, for example, is boisterous in all the best ways.
