Album Review: Mortal Blood – Harbingers of Chaos (Self Released)
Dan Krell is the mastermind behind the doom metal project, Mortal Blood. Having composed, performed, recorded, produced, and mastered the project, the new album ‘Harbingers of Chaos’ will be released on September 6th, 2024.
Doom, yes, but not exclusively doom. Mortal Blood’s Harbinger of Chaos is given a fresh twist via the medium of gothic, death, and black metal. A fresh twist that creates a more elaborately atmospheric sound, even as a raw and savage edge permeates every aspect of it.
All of this, and more, is prevalent on the opening tome of haunting heaviness that is Incantations of the Dammed. Mortal Blood showcasing aspects of horror through a dark gothic vibe, but also showcasing a deep metallised aspect that threatens to explode into pandemonium throughout. If the level of discomfort it creates is too much, be warned, it doesn’t get any easier.
The aptly titled Requiem of Gothic Doom proudly shows off an even more elaborate soundscape as Mortal Blood gets experimental both vocally and instrumentally. Still, it harbours so much dark intensity. Something equally prevalent in the following weird wickedness of The Fallen and the poignant chilling ambience of Persona Non Grata. Mortal Blood continues to create disconcerting vibes and a sense of gothic grandeur with no lack of substantial weight.
Weight that continues to press down as the title track lets the blacker side of Mortal Blood come out to play. The darkest and evilest track of all. Even if aspects of Horde of the Blackened Sun certainly give it a run for its money. Although what makes this less of a ‘wicked’ track is the cleaner guitar sound and the drawn-out doomy structure. Regardless, it’s just as enjoyable.
Mortal Blood has crafted something quite unique sounding even while it utilises familiar genre ideas and creative blends. Right up to the end, an end that comes in startling style with the dangerous and challenging gothic edge of The Outcast, it excites. Several listens and most will be hooked.
