EP Review: Far From Refuge – False Flag (Self Released)

Diverse Brit prog metal crew, Far from Refuge, lay down a significant marker in the form of their blistering new EP, ‘False Flag’, which lands on July 19th, 2024.

One of those bands who refuse to be constrained by genre terms, Far from Refuge might be predominantly a progressive metal band, but it is their wild array of creative ideas that helps make them standout. Creative ideas that draw from a whole host of different genres and ensures everything they do sounds fresh and exciting. This is just one reason as to why they’re considered one of the stronger modern acts in the UK scene.

Don’t believe me? Far from Refuge have the proof and it comes in the form of False Flag. A five-track varied banger that thrills from the beginning, Daybreak, a heart-racing showcase of impressive progressive intensity, anthemic metalcore vibes, and melodic death infusions. To the end, Carcass, an enthusiastically bold finale that uses melody to enhance the underlying beauty that exists in the EP as a whole.

In between those two excellent pieces of music though, there are also a trio of impressive listens. Namely the fast and furious head banger that is Ghost of Eros, the erratic and fun progressive weirdness of the title track, and the frenetic and infectiously heavy Whitemane,

Altogether, it makes for a killer EP and even more consistent greatness from Far from Refuge.
