EP Review: Aphelion Entity – Aphelion Entity (Lifeless Chasm Records)
Emerging from the dark underbelly of New York City, Aphelion Entity is a sonic force to be reckoned with. Formed in 2021 by bassist/vocalist Jon Bruno (Needlepusher), guitarist Alex Lefteratos, and drummer Nick Santana (Needlepusher), with Calder Hannan (Florid Ekstasis) later joining as the second guitarist, Aphelion Entity will release their self-titled debut EP via Lifeless Chasm Records on June 20th, 2024.
Unfathomable darkness and eldritch terror await on Aphelion Entity’s debut EP. Featuring four tracks steeped in cosmic horror, inspired by the likes of H.P. Lovecraft, and distorted by the sound of extreme metal.
Aphelion Entity are a vicious sounding band, extolling the virtues of death metal, but with a rawer, blacker and gorier touch. From the moment Extraterrestrial Etiology of Myocardial Infarction rises from the void, Aphelion Entity have a hypnotic grip as they spew violent intensity directly into the mind.
Madness sets in quickly as Hypoborean Invader has these soul-crushing slow sections built around the ugliest of death metal speed and heaviness. It’s a complex effort too, that sees the band changing rhythm constantly. Which, by contrast, makes Surreptitious Cosmogenic Extraction seems a little blasé at first because it is brutality focused. However, listen on, and once again, Aphelion Entity deliver something much more profound and putrefying.
This level of extreme is an acquired taste, and the rawness of the record isn’t going to appeal to many, but those that do have a sickness in them, will delight in the big finale of Enraptured by Ophanim. Aphelion Entity’s dark epic, featuring a cacophony of evil sounds and savage heaviness.
