Album Review: Lowlives – Freaking Out (Spinefarm Records)

Alternative grunge rock band, Lowlives will release their much-anticipated debut album, ‘Freaking Out’ on May 31st, 2024, via Spinefarm Records.

What is making Lowlives so popular? It’s really simple. Their rock sound is incredibly infectious and accessible, while also having a meaningful and relatable honesty to it. They’re a band who have ‘superstars’ written all over them and it’s songs like the peppy singalong that is the title track and the grungy 90’s tinged groover that is Liar which proves it. If you want to get a basic understanding of what Lowlives are capable of, these first two tracks will deliver.

Their output is so strong on this album though, and with Getting High on Being Low they showcase so much of that lovable depth with hearty rock energy and vibrant infectiousness. Then hitting some really effective grungy lows with the methodical tempo of Swan Dive, a track that has a really mellow outro to make you feel really relaxed. Before along comes Loser sees Lowlives make a play for the having the most anthemic track of the year. Even if its alt vibes are turning back the clock a few years.

Their melding of familiar alternative rock (let’s not use the words ‘old school’) with modern groove and infectiousness continues to make this album a delight. The pinnacle of this album arguably being reached with You Don’t Care. An incredibly strong track that lifts the spirits with its heavy rock vitality. You’re going to move here, that much is guaranteed.

The album flies by in a tornado of enjoyability, and at no point do Lowlives ‘rock the boat’ by changing the winning formula. They have a collection of bangers, plenty of heart and soul, and that’s all anyone could ever want. The latter half bringing forth the punchy Out of Step, the moody Closer Than You Know, the blood-pumping Damien, and the calm sound of Vertigo. Lovable right up to the very end.

It really is as simple as Lowlives being a band that anyone can listen to and enjoy. A band with an album that features infectious track after infectious track. It’s why they already are so beloved, and their popularity will only grow larger once this album is heard by the masses.
