EP Review: Zero One – Faults In My Design (Self Released)

Zero One, the Edinburgh-based metalcore quintet will release their sophomore EP, ‘Faults In My Design’, on May 31st, 2024.

Beginning their EP with heavy and harsh intent, Zero One bring the noise in garish style with the opening bombardment that comes from These Visions. It’s a crashing level of heaviness that mellows out in the chorus with a cleaner sound. While the structure might be metalcore 101, there’s no denying that Zero One have a more intense focus.

Something confirmed by the more anthemic Hollowed, where the melodies are more prominent, but they’re tinged by a certain level of mournfulness. When Zero One get heavy on this one, it has a blackened death metal vibe. It’s an unforgettable beast of a track and sets the bar at an impossible high.

Although that doesn’t stop Zero One from reaching for it with the stompy ferociousness of Vicious Cycle and the frantic ruthlessness of Trinity. Both great tracks in their own right. Before Orion ends things in a more melodramatic way. Zero One adding a really strong sense of moodiness to close out a very strong release overall.

The appeal of this EP comes from the fact that Zero One make their heavier side the focal point, building melody around that, rather than the other way around. It makes the soaring choruses and mellow moments all the more impactful when it has been preceded by heavy chaos or some carnage.
