Beginning the album off in atmospheric and melodic fashion, building up in cinematic style, before exploding into a robust post-rocking rhythmic groove, sleepmakeswaves set the senses alight with opener All Hail Skull. Providing a strong sense of wonder with layers of instrumental detail, it’s an emphatic start.

That feeling of wonder only grows stronger and stronger though as the album goes on too. sleepmakeswaves crafting even more vibrancy with the colourful peppiness of Super Realm Park and the heart-racing intensity of Ritual Control. The lack of inhibition that makes up the sleepmakeswaves sound is on full and focused display with these first few tracks and there’s no denying the impact they have.

Although it’s fair to say that making an impact is what sleepmakeswaves do, and the dramatic melody of Black Paradise is further proof of that fact.

How about the gloriously atmospheric Verdigris though? A really special piece of music that wouldn’t be out of place on the soundtrack of something like Sunshine or Interstellar. It’s cinematic brilliance that has so much feeling.

Following that, sleepmakeswaves bring back the energy with the thrilling Terror Future, showcasing layers upon layers of errant and erratic rhythms. Notably, this is a track with some vocals, and that surprising moment comes with so much heartfelt melody too. Then it’s time to go big with the title track. A piece of music that is over eight minutes long, exceptionally creative, and delivers unparalleled beauty blended with direct heavy rock groove. It’s a track you sink into.

Which does mean This Close Forever could be found lacking, except sleepmakeswaves form is so strong, it’s another absolute banger. One that seems rooted in melody, until the band unveil some crashing instrumental heaviness for even more thrills. It’s a fabulous finish to a fabulous album overall.
