EP Review: Love Rarely – Lonely People (Self Released)

Leeds based post-punk outfit Love Rarely are set to release their much-anticipated debut EP, ‘Lonely People’ on March 8th, 2024. An EP that serves as a poignant exploration of the complexities of love, loss, and the human experience.

Knowing what Love Rarely explore on this EP makes the experience all the more powerful, as everyone has experienced or will inevitably experience some form of love and loss. After all, it’s all part of the human experience, and while it never gets any easier, you do hope you can learn something from these experiences. Even if it’s just ways to cope.

Now this might lead you to believe that Lonely People is an EP of melancholy. A band looking to create melodrama and push melody to the forefront of their sound. To some degree, this does ring true, but the post-punk stylings of Love Rarely means there’s way more on offer here than first expected and they are more than willing to experiment.

It results in an EP of six tracks that are modern, have a raw intensity, can be exceptionally heartfelt, but connect on a more soulful level because how expressive Love Rarely is. It’s fair to say that they’re throwing a lot of feeling into this, and that resonates deeply. Going from wilder and more energetic moments to expansive melodic moments, there’s a kind of mania to Love Rarely a lot of time. Which does reflect the intensity of feeling that can come from love and loss.

After all, we’re all just human.
