Album Review: Kollapse – AR (Fysisk Format Records)

With titles alluding to the life cycle of an insect, AR (“Scars” for non-Scandinavians) deals with the human psyche in its most base forms. The new Kollapse album will be released on March 8th, 2024, via Fysisk Format Records.

Knowing that Kollapse have gone out of their way to make this album an ugly and abrasive listen can’t quite prepare the mind for the level of unpleasantness that exists within its seven tracks. It is, every bit, a despicable example of crashing and thrashing noise, discomfort in sonic form.

Yet, for fans of garish noise rock, experimental metal, sludge, and more, AR is an experience you’ll want to live at least once. Kollapse have dug down deep to deliver this album, and the torment is palpable. It comes through every aspect of the music. From the serrated riffing, to the bone-crushing percussion, and the scathing, throat-tearing style of vocals. Kollapse have aimed for intensity and reached a level that proves that they are one of the most exciting modern acts.

A modern act refusing to follow any particular rule when it comes to accessibility. Putting it simply, your anti-metal friends and family aren’t going to enjoy this.

Here’s the thing, while all descriptions for the album will lean towards its abrasive feel, that shouldn’t lead anyone into believing this album lacks musicianship or creative twists. Kollapse are immensely talented and make this album not only a varied listen, but also one with many layers. Anarchic, filled with bubbling resentment, violent, but never without reason. AR is less something you listen to, and more something you experience.

It isn’t for everyone, but everyone that gives it a chance, will come away feeling like it was necessary listening. Aches and pains? It’s to be expected.
