Album Review: Morta Skuld – Creation Undone (Peaceville Records)
Legendary death metal outfit Morta Skuld will unleash their new album ‘Creation Undone’ on the masses on February 23rd, 2024, via Peaceville Records.
The legends are back, and back sounding beastlier than ever. No frills and no flair, it’s a Morta Skuld death metal special, and it is going to break bones. Hell, the drumming on this record alone will leave some might big bruises.
Of course, as spectacular as they are, they are one part of a complete picture that makes Creation Undone a ferocious listen. Track after track of measured brutishness, with themes exploring an increasingly savage, corrupt, and destructive state of the world in present times. From the moment We Rise We Fall unleashes a relenting bout of speed and heaviness, you know you’re in for a damn good time.
A good time that involves a cacophony of noise with the manic ferocity of The End of Reason and the downright nasty sounding Painful Conflict. Morta Skuld proving emphatically that this album is not going to go easy on the psyche in the slightest. Then there is Unforeseen Obstacles, a track that has just a touch of groove to it, but is still damnation personified. The drums might be the star of this show, but absolutely no shade can be thrown at the number of riffs and hooks that are being sprayed about, nor at a set of vocals that have the guttural power to strip flesh from bone.
The appeal of this album is that fact that Morta Skuld aren’t trying to change the world with their sound. They are a death metal band, and over their long and storied career, they have mastered it. It’s why this album continues to satisfy so much with tracks like Perfect Prey, Soul Piercing Sorrow, Into Temptation, and Self Destructive Emotions. It’s exhausting, but only because of the amount of head-banging it drives the listener to do.
A drive that continues right up the very end, even as Oblivion delivers such a forceful amount heaviness and By Design explodes with righteous fury. Two more heavyweight examples of death metal done right by a band who couldn’t disappoint, even if they tried.
