Album Review: Rough Justice – Faith in Vain (MLVLTD)

Sheffield hardcore heavy upstarts Rough Justice will release their debut full length album, ‘Faith in Vain’, on January 12th via Malevolence’s record label, MLVLTD.

To be honest, there’s no shortage of quality young hardcore bands, so there’s an argument to be made that Rough Justice are really going to have to be something special to stand out from the pack. An argument that every naysayer will lose the moment Faith in Vain starts.

Crank up the volume, warm up the limbs, it’s time to get your two-step on.

Cowards is the welcome to this album that 2024 needs, a smash-mouth example of groove and fury. Rough Justice showing off their impressive metal capabilities, before unleashing hardcore carnage on eager ears. Although, it’s the following Overruled that really gets the adrenaline spiking. This is the stuff that energises the mind, body, and soul. A crowd-killer if there ever was one.

One of the album’s more musically expansive efforts then comes in the form of the title track. Rough Justice expanding their sonic palette while staying true to their hardcore roots. Hell, there’s even a couple of ‘bleurghs’ in there, but the real takeaway here is the melody and cleaner chorus that gives this track a more anthemic vibe.

That then leads to Rusting, which is an ‘intermission’ of sorts, thick with atmosphere and showcasing emotive melody. Before it’s back to the stompy hardcore punchiness with the raging When it Comes, an absolute beast of a track.

Which signals a race to the finish with track after track of memorable heavy grove, hardcore garishness, and some surprising moments of catchiness. Rough Justice making sure the likes of Boa Constrictor and Backwards Mask hit as hard as everything that came before. With the former of the two having a killer drop in particular. It means no-one is going to be feeling tired or bored by the time Mind’s Eye delivers one final brutal assault of noise.

Keep a close eye on Rough Justice, they have a very bright future ahead of them based off what comes from this album.
