EP Review: Blind Chaos – Very Metal Christmas (Self Released)

Norwegian metal duo Blind Chaos, featuring members of I The Betrayer (Chris Wiborg and Kyle Sevenoaks), have released their Christmas covers EP ‘Heavy Metal Christmas’. Featuring four covers of four ‘iconic’ festive hits.

Speaking about the EP, Sevenoaks said:

This Christmas covers EP began life when the question was asked “WHY THE FUCK DO I HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS CRAP EVERY GODDAMN YEAR?” To which the most logical answer was: make it metal. So when you’re sat with your family on Christmas day, you can listen to metal while keeping your family happy that they get to listen to Christmas songs. Technically we’re not wrong.

Blind Chaos… they’re a heavy band, so it should come as no surprise that this four-track Christmas covers EP features versions of ‘pop’ hits that are given heavy treatments. Four very familiar tracks, as each has been covered by many, many bands before, but four tracks Blind Chaos certainly make their own.

First there is a frantic and frenzied sounding version of WHAM!’s Last Christmas, the cacophony of instruments certainly giving this beloved hit a harder edge. Then there is the first of two Mariah Carey covers, All I Want For Christmas Is You. Blind Chaos giving the over-played and over-covered hit a groovy and energised tone. The other Carey cover being Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, where the band up the metal in a fun way.

Finally, to complete the EP, it’s Eartha Kitt’s Santa Baby, a lesser covered track from the metal side of things. Blind Chaos speed this one up significantly, and keep it under two-minutes, making it one of the highlights of the overall EP.

It’s a bit of festive fun, and it’s nice to see Blind Chaos put a bit more effort in than most as they try to give these tracks a bit of freshness. Each cover is done well, to the point that the entire EP wouldn’t be out of place on a Christmas party playlist!
